Silly Bandz: Banned?

The Bandz are now contraband. Schools in several states, including New York, Texas, Florida and Massachusetts, have blacklisted Silly Bandz, those stretchy, colorful bracelets that are creeping up the forearms of school kids across the U.S. And starting this week, all 800-some kids at my son's elementary school in Raleigh, N.C., were commanded to leave at home their collections of rubber band–like bracelets, which retail for about $5 per pack of 24. What could possibly be so insidious about a cheap silicone bracelet?

"It's a distraction," says Jill Wolborsky, a fourth-grade teacher at my son's school, who banned them from her classroom before the principal implemented a schoolwide ban. One student stole some confiscated Bandz from her desk, choosing them over the cash in her drawer. (See pictures of teens in America.)

Students fiddle with them during class and arrange swaps - trading, say, a bracelet with a mermaid for one with a dragon - when they should be concentrating on schoolwork, teachers say. Sometimes a trade goes bad - kids get buyer's remorse too - and hard feelings, maybe even scuffles, ensue.

That's what prompted Karen White, principal of Snow Rogers Elementary School in Gardendale, Ala., in October to become one of the first administrators to forbid students their Bandz. "We try not to limit their freedom of expression and what they wear, but when this became a problem, I knew we had to nip it in the bud pretty quickly," says White, who has since extended an olive branch in the form of monthly Silly Bandz days. (See pictures of a public boarding school in Washington, D.C.)

Silly Bandz are the latest in a long list of kid-centric fads - in the tradition of Cabbage Patch Kids, Beanie Babies, PokÉmon cards and Crocs. BCP Imports LLC, the small business in Toledo, Ohio, that's behind the bracelets, was not prepared for the frenzy. It's increased its workforce from 20 employees to 200 in the past year and just this week added 22 phone lines to keep up with inquiries. The company sells millions of packs a month, and Robert Croak, the president, can still hardly believe it. (He took my call after hanging up with Macy's, which is interested in creating a Silly Bandz float for its storied Thanksgiving Day parade.)

Croak got inspired about three years ago at a product show in China, where a Japanese artist had devised a rubber band cute enough to escape the trash bin. Though Silly Bandz have been out for two years, they began catching on a year ago - Alabama was an early adopter, as were New Jersey and Tennessee. They're just now gaining traction in California and Texas. (See where jewelry is fitting into green designs for 2010.)
"They're getting banned because kids play with them so much," says Croak, who maintains they're the right product at the right time, a cost-conscious trinket in tough economic times that can even be a learning tool for little ones, kind of like flexible flash cards.

His company receives about 500 fan letters a week. One, signed by a 10-year-old named Logan Librett and a few of his friends in New Rochelle, N.Y., suggested a way to circumvent all the bothersome Silly Bandz restrictions: "Some schools in New York have banned them, but we have ideas that might change that ... clear silly bands that teachers can't see and only glow in the dark."

Just in case the company bites, Librett offered his address. He's still waiting.

?uestion is,

what are you willing to do to get what you say you want? Are you willing to discipline your mind and your mouth? Are you willing to get up eaqrly, stay up late, and work hard all hours between? Are you willing to work for free? Are your willing to do it with excellence? Are you willing to do it even when your best friend shakes her head, laughs at you, and tells you you are crazy?

The question is, what are you willing to give up to get what you say you want? Are you willing to give up bad habits, negative thinking, and negative people? Are you willing to take a risk and put your ass ont he line when all signs indicate that you are totally insane? Are you willing to stand up for yourself? To speak up for yourself? Are you willing to walk awaqy from people who will be very upset when you do stand up for  and speak up? Are you willing to walk away from eveything you know to get to something and someplace you can only hope will be what you really want?

The question is, who are you willing to be? Are you willing to be a free and independent thinker? Are you willing to be the one who calls the shots? Are you willing to follow when need be? Are you willing to have fun? Are you willing to work hard? Are you willing to live in total peace and joy? All by youself,if necessary? As long as you can find one excuse not to answer these questions affirmatively, you will never what you say you want.

It's My World

shout out to my hometown homie,T.Real,
who is the reason for this post.

Yesterday I was feeling kinda down and lonely, and it didn't help that I was alone the ENTIRE day. I cleaned up, sat around, watched a few movies then Brown Sugar came on. I love Brown Sugar.[not as much as Love Jones or Poetic Justice tho.] That's when it hit me forreal,I wanted some attention. My folks finally arrived home but that wasn't the type of attention I needed. My Homie hit me up with his usual text, "What you doin 2night?". I knew he was tryna chill but I didn't know he was feeling how I was. We went to see Kickass[btw, is a stupid yet halarious movie. I do recommend it if you seriously need a laugh && if you're a guy(Like the homie), you'll LOVE that Mustang.] After that we headed to the gas station and got our normal, me- a Arizona Lemonade him- a Red,yes Red(we're from Memphis) Powerade. We got back to my house and were chilling on the step and he did his ramblings of stories that I'd missed and flashbacks. He rambled longer than normal, knowing something was wrong, hoping I would start rambling to him. I never did. So he asked, No answer. & Again. No Answer. He told me he wouldn't leave til I told him, we'd sit til the Sun came up if we'd have to. No,we wouldn't.He could.I told him it wasn't his concern. He knows me TOO well."If it didn't concern me,you would have told me." Sad part is he was right. I still wouldn't open my mouth so as it grew earlier in the morn,he grew restless and impaitent. So to the 'BluBelle'[what I named his car =)] he went and told me he'd call as he drove.  I went into the house, the phone rang_Homie caliing. I answer-"Come Back." "Come Back?" "Come Back. I wanna talk." "IIght." "K." -CLICK-
Two minutes later his hoppin out Belle and on the step. "Talk." "I didn't think you'd come back" [shakes his head] "I'm here, wassup?" "I just got alotta things on my brain." "Like?" [he looks at the sky,it's dark,2:35ish,bout to rain. -HE HATES THE RAIN.-] "It's about to rain? [nods his head.]Go home. I'll call you and tell you." [he chuckles] "Iight."
I go into the house, phone rings_Homie."Hold on. K?" 'iight." Speak to the folks I love, head to my room. I start to spill it little by little. Then he interrupts, something he rarely does especailly to speak about hisself. He starts to tell me things about his past, things he's never told anyone. He asks me a qestion he's asked me before but I've always given the same answer,"Nope." "I don't believe you one f*ckin' bit." This beloved question, "Do you mind if I talked to ------?" That person would be my bestest. I told him I don't mind, I just want you to be happy. [He snapped.] "It's not about what I want or anyone else. When I make decisions I make them with me in mind, with other's feelings into consideration. If this was Rai's scratch that Rachael's world what would you want? What do you want!?" [I'm SILENT. stunned, confused, and deep in thought.] He goes on to tell me what he wants, which let me say seem so simple yet I know they aren't. By this time he's arrived home and i'm still quiet. "I'll call you back." "Alright." -CLICK-
WHAT DO I WANT? WHAT DOES RACHAEL WANT?,
the last thing i said and thought before I dozed off to sleep before recieving a phone call.

I texted Homie at 6:46am to tell him what I wanted.

  1. My family to be straight.

  2. Money for out of state tutition

  3. Higher GPA than a 3.0

  4. "A man who compliments me,supports me,trust and respects me,and is doing this own thing with no problem spending a little downtime with me. Someone who I can enjoy plays and dinner with,or just play Xbox, chilling at the house."
Well this ain't my world but i'll work hard to get the things I want and deserve ,how about you?
WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Can I save you from you?

This post is inspired by Drake’s song titled “Fall for your type”.

WHAT TYPE DO YOU ALWAYS FALL FOR?

With me, I always fall for the guy who ends up being someone totally different. OR. He's everything I want but too old. I end up seeing a side of him I never seen before. It’s like I fell in love with someone else and got the short end out of the deal. This is why when I date someone now I try my best to let my guards down but I am NO fool.I take my time getting to know someone and if that person does not understand they obviously do not want me for the long-run. In order to give love another chance, you have to learn how to not blame the new person for the old person’s mistakes. That is an EPIC fail to a new start. Also, to love again you must eventually let those walls down and let love in. But this time around, make sure that person will catch you when you fall.
